Its been a habit of football managers to insult the on-field referees. It is really bad for the game in general. I won't say that the referees don't make decisions that normally favor top clubs.
It is about protecting the interest of the game.

The classic example can be that of the former Chelsea coach Jose Mourinho condemning a referee for poor decisions. The referee got life threatening calls from fans and quit the jobs. Like us even he is human. He doesn't have a television set where he can watch replays over and over again. Referees have to make decisions at lightning speeds.

The managers should know they are responsible for everything they do off and on the field. They should act as professionals, it's about time.

When a manger is found guilty of misconduct, he is just fined or at the most banned for two or three games, which hardly matters. The same managers are not learning from their mistakes which is a pity as they are grown up men. One should always respect authority and on the field always respect the referee. If we wont' teach that to a manager, how can we expect that from a player?

The English Premier League has started and some signs have already began to emerge!!
Apart from Arsenal who finished Fourth last season, all teams in the Big Four struggled. Most noteworthy Liverpool who went 2-1 down to Tottenham.

Manchester City is already the talk of town, while Chelsea has already shown strength in their ranks. Finally Ancelotti, is the MR. Right for Chelsea. Manchester had a poor start, but Wayne Rooney showed why he is still among the best in world by his solo goal.Owen missed a golden chance to open his Premier league account, Wayne Rooney setting him a sitter.Berbatov failed to impress again.Liverpool just made too many mistakes.

ManU lost to Chelsea on penalties

It was a great game played by two competitive sides .However the tide of the match Chelsea's way thanks to the decision of the referee of not giving a foul on Evra by Ballack.Manu at the time had 9 players on the field , as Evra was injured and laid flat on the ground and Berbatov receiving treatment off the field.Drogba made a splendid run in the Manu box and gifted the ball to Lampard whose powerful shot should have been stopped by Ben Foster , who had a miserable game.

Both Ballack and Evra displayed poor sportsmanship with Evra receiving a Yellow card.Evra also missed the spot kick, or should I say gifted the ball to Peter Czech as if he was te United goalkeeper.

There were some positives though for United with Rooney getting on the score sheet and Owen showed some form.However the first half goalscorer Nani left the field early in second half

Chelsea had Peter Czech to Thank for the trophy who made quite brilliant saves.Ben foster was truly the worst player.

The Portuguese winger has been insisting to join the Spanish giants after two years of courting.

Even though they were only 15 at the time, he asked them to betray their Brazilian club Fluminense, who had already agreed to let the brothers move to Old Trafford. Rafael, now 18, said: “We were not too happy with the way he approached us. The scout said he was from Arsenal and invited us to come and train. At that time we had already been to see Manchester United and train once with our club’s permission. But this man wanted to take us to England and say nothing to Fluminense. We disagreed with that principle. Fluminense was where we started, we had been there for years and they looked after us.”

The likes of Wayne Rooney won something for the first time that day and you could see the delight on his face. I genuinely think from that point we had the belief to go on winning. At this club we have to be winning trophies every season whether that's the Carling Cup or Champions League.

The confidence gained through beating Wigan was incredible and there are some players who may be playing on Sunday like Jonny Evans, Danny Welbeck, Darron Gibson, Ben Foster and the Da Silva brothers who could be the backbone of this club for years to come but as yet, they haven't won trophies.

Sunday's game at Wembley represents a great chance for them to get the special buzz of winning silverware. For me, there's nothing like winning a trophy, it's the best feeling in football. There's nothing to replace it, it's a memory you always cherish.

Michael Carrick was delighted to be recognised by supporters around the world for his form last month, when he made seven starts and scored in both of United's home league games against Hull City (4-3) and Stoke City (5-0).

"It’s a huge honour, I think I’d prefer to win that than the Ballon d’Or!" Carrick told Red View, somewhat tongue in cheek.

In a year that marks 50 years since Munich and 40 since United’s first European Cup success, there has been plenty to look back on this season. But Wayne Rooney wants to write a new chapter in the Reds’ history in Moscow.

Having already beaten Chelsea to the title, Rooney says the players are relaxed and confident. “We enjoyed ourselves last Sunday, but we’re holding back celebrations until after Wednesday,” he says. “Hopefully then we’ll have even more to celebrate.

“We’re more relaxed with the Premier League in the bag. Chelsea might be more anxious because if they don’t win then they’ll win nothing this season. Maybe that helps us, but I’m sure winning the league won’t make it an easier game.”

Sir Alex Ferguson has frequently stated his belief that United, based on stature and past opportunities, should have won more European Cups. Rooney, too, aims to alter that record, and with 1958 and 1968 in mind, hopes fate plays a part in 2008.

One win from the title, another from Champions League glory and even the sun is shining in Manchester. The mood in the United camp couldn't be better.

Contrary to a claim from Chelsea’s Michael Ballack that the run-up to Sunday's match at Wigan would be “the longest week of the Reds players’ lives”, the United squad is relishing a ten-day period that could yield a glorious double.

"It’s great to be at training knowing you are working to try and win the title and Champions League," says Mikael Silvestre.

"The thought of playing my part was the main reason I was so keen to get back from my injury. I knew we'd do well this season and go far in both competitions.

“There is a great atmosphere among the players because we're so close [to success]. Everybody is enjoying it, and with the sun outside it is a great time for us!"

There's been little time to savour Tuesday’s epic win in Europe - now it's eyes down in the sprint finish for the domestic title, starting with West Ham at home.

However, the 1-0 victory against Barcelona could well play its part in lifting the squad after a gruelling eight matches in April, and Owen Hargreaves says United’s talent and team spirit will carry the Reds through.

“The most important thing is we have the ability and the belief in each other to do it,” Hargreaves tells United Review ahead of Saturday’s 12:45 kick-off at Old Trafford.

“We are all very confident that, even with the setback against Chelsea last week, we can win our final two games and clinch the title.”

For Hargreaves, the Reds' squad has the perfect blend of experience and youth, which he feels puts United in a strong position to hold off Chelsea's challenge.

“There’s a great combination of qualities,” he says. “The experience we have in the squad from Gary Neville, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Edwin van der Sar and Mikael Silvestre is vital; there’s also the young guns like Wayne Rooney, Cristiano Ronaldo, Carlos Tevez, Nani, Anderson - some of whom are chasing their first title.

“We’ve also got the most experienced manager in the business, a manager that has been in this situation on many occasions before. That gives everyone confidence.”

Are you pleased with your form this season?
I try to improve and this season has been even better than the last. People say I need to perform better in big games; I respect that opinion, but I don’t feel I need to prove anything to anyone. I’m pleased with my progress, but I believe this United squad is the best I’ve been involved in. It’s more consistent and more mature.

In recent seasons you bet Sir Alex you’d score 15 goals; now you have 36...
That’s true! I’m happy with the improvement. I’m a better player now than I was a year ago and definitely better than when I first came here. I hope that continues. Why have I scored more goals this season? It’s hard to say, I’ve just had more chances.

Do you have a favourite goal from this season?
I enjoyed my header against Roma away. That was very satisfying. But I like the free kicks against Portsmouth, Bolton and Sunderland. It’s hard to pick one.

Were you proud to beat George Best’s 32 goals in a season from midfield?
I don’t really want to break anybody’s record – I feel bad! I’ve seen tapes of George Best playing and he was absolutely fantastic. It’s a wonderful record to hold.

You’re tipped to win numerous Player of the Year awards again this year…
It’s nice to be recognised, but if I had the choice of winning, say, the Champions League or the Golden Boot, I’d pick the Champions League every time.

How important will United’s forthcoming matches against Arsenal and Chelsea be in the title race?
I don’t think you can single any games out as more important than others. Arsenal and Chelsea are obviously big ones but I don’t think those matches will determine where the trophy ends up. We need to win all our games and some of those are very tough. We’re going away to Middlesbrough this weekend, we’re going to Blackburn, we’ve got some tough games.

What did you learn from winning the league last season?
I discovered how good it feels to win trophies and I want that feeling again. But we also lost in the FA Cup final and went out of the Champions League in the semi-final. Those experiences have given me even greater determination to do well.

At what point this season did you begin to believe the title was a distinct possibility?
We’ve had faith in ourselves from day one, and nothing has changed in that respect. We had always set out to win the league this season and the feeling this will happen grows stronger as the campaign moves on. Now is the time we really need to hit our best form because this is when it counts.

Speaking of form, are you happy with your performances in recently?
I’m enjoying my football and the team is playing well. If you can’t enjoy your football here, there’s something wrong with you! I’ve been very happy with my form since Christmas. I hope to keep getting better.

How hard is it to maintain form when the team is being rotated?
If you look at our results, I don’t think you can say a bad word about the rotation policy. Whoever’s played has done well and we’ve won more often than not. As a player, you’d prefer to be involved in every game, but the little rests here and there mean everyone’s still fresh. That was obviously the boss’s idea at the start of the campaign and he’s been proved correct once again. It was around this time last season that we had a few injuries, which resulted in the same players playing in every game. We eventually got a little tired and paid the price. This time we’ve been able to have a rest and use different players according to the games.

So, what would you say you bring to the team?
I just try to help out at both ends of the pitch. I supply the attackers as much as possible and create chances for them, but at the same time I’m looking to defend and help out the back four. I do enjoy playing here at United because I get a lot of the ball. And, of course, it’s a pleasure to play with these lads. People talk about my passing ability and that’s always been one of my strengths. However, it’s easier to look good when you’re playing with others who move so well off the ball. Our forwards make my life a lot less difficult.

Having sampled the euphoria that comes with beating Liverpool at Anfield, Anderson is hoping for more of the same on Sunday when United entertain Rafael Benitez's men at Old Trafford.

The Brazilian was a star performer in December's 1-0 win courtesy of Carlos Tevez's first-half strike. Anderson reveals he was fully aware of the importance attached to United-Liverpool clashes before he joined the Reds, but admits he was surprised by the enormity of the occasion.

"The atmosphere amongst the supporters and the determination both sides had to win the game at Anfield was unbelievable," he told United Review. "It’s difficult to describe the emotion that I experienced in that match – it was amazing. And I’m sure it’ll be the same on Sunday."

Anderson has become a firm favourite with the Old Trafford faithful after a series of imperious displays in United's midfield. The 19-year-old has been overwhelmed by his rising cult status, and insists he'll be doing his utmost to ensure Reds fans around the world have a happy Easter.

"It's difficult to describe how it feels to hear the fans sing my name," he beamed. "It gives me extra strength on the pitch and makes me want to do my best to repay them for the fantastic support they have shown me. Hopefully I'll do that on Sunday."

English Clubs Rule!!!!!!!!!

That may or may not be true - and, indeed, is probably impossible to prove - but the fact that four English clubs are likely to be in the draw for the Champions League quarter-finals sends out a very loud message.

With holders AC Milan and La Liga leaders Real Madrid crashing out this week, the odds are stacked in favour of at least one Premier League team reaching the Moscow final on 21 May.

Manchester United and Lionel Messi-deprived Barcelona are currently joint favourites, with Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool (if they see off Inter Milan next Tuesday) not far behind.

An all-English quarter-final or semi-final could well be on the cards too when the draw for both is made by Uefa on 14 March.

United are desperate to win the European Cup 50 years after the Munich tragedy, while Arsenal's brilliance in Milan on Tuesday suggests Arsene Wenger's young team could go all the way.

And, despite the in-fighting at Anfield - or rather between the United States and Dubai - Liverpool are capable of reaching another final, as are Chelsea, whose owner Roman Abramovich is rumoured to have booked up half of Moscow for the team and the post-final party celebrations.

Add to this the strong showing so far of Everton, Tottenham and Bolton in the Uefa Cup and it begs the question: will English clubs rule in Europe this season?

Who is the most difficult player to play against?
MC: Scholesy in training!
OH : Seriously, he’s the best around. But there are different types of players, some where you know you’re going to have to be at the top of your game. Sometimes playing teams at the bottom of the league can be harder because they’re onto you all game, whereas the best teams give you more time on the ball. Some of the most gifted don’t always want to defend - Zidane for instance - but he’s one of the best I’ve ever played against. Good players find space and time when there is none, and no-one’s better at that than Scholesy. The best footballers also slow the game down - even if it’s very hectic - they can put their foot on the ball.
MC: That’s a very important element of our game.

You’ve all experienced injuries in the last season or two - it must be frustrating to pick up a knock when you’re trying to cement a place in the team?
MC: Ji’s been out longer than most. [laughs] You answer this one Ji…
JSP: It is very difficult. When you get an injury you work alone in the gym; you don’t see any friends. You have to keep doing the same things but you just have to keep thinking about what it’s like when you get back.
OH: I’m shocking at watching games.
JSP : I feel uncomfortable and wonder why I’m just watching and sitting there.
MC: Me too. It’s so frustrating. It doesn’t matter what injury it is, whether it lasts three weeks or a few months, you know you’re going to be missing out and you’re not with the boys day in, day out. It’s hard to take but it’s part of the game, so you have to find a way of dealing with it.

Are you finding it easier to get involved now you speak the language, Ji? You mentioned in a previous interview that you didn't always understand the jokes in the dressing room, has that changed?
JSP : [laughs] No, not really! I enjoy speaking English and I am getting better but it’s not enough yet.
MC: You’re kidding, aren’t you?
OH: He’s hammering Patrice [Evra] every day!

What would constitute a successful season this year?
OH: To win as much as possible. We would like success in everything and people often say that, but it’s hard to do it all. It’s not that easy to win the Champions League and we have to be on top of our game between now and May to do that.
MC: Getting some more nice easy draws in the FA Cup would help our cause no end!

Wenger sorry for 4-0 At Old Trafford....

The talking points at Old Trafford included Emmanuel Eboue's sending off which looked a bit harsh from my position. The game was over after the red card and maybe even before that because we never looked like we could come back.

Then there was Nani's ball-juggling which I thought was a little bit disrespectful. He had a very good game on Saturday but that was not needed. But it can happen to a young player.

I didn't really have serious thoughts about the treble but you try and make a choice as late as you can. Saturday was difficult to swallow for the players because it looked like we did not have the physical resources to come back into the game.

At the moment our cup defeats are unbelievable. When we lose in the cup we get a hiding. We don't concede in the League but when we do concede we do it well! Either way we need to recover quickly because we need to be at our best to beat Milan.

As for the rest of the season, the targets in front of us are very clear. They are the Premier League and the Champions League. We are not in a position where we have to make a choice. For Carrick, the trip brings back fond memories of a ground he called home for two seasons before moving to Old Trafford in 2006.

“They’ve been through a rough patch, but they were always going to find their way with the players they have. They have some real talent, and Juande Ramos has turned their results around. It was good to see Spurs reach the Carling Cup final and hopefully they can go on and win it. It would be nice to see them do that. But in terms of Saturday’s game, for me, it’s just another match that we have to win."

Carrick believes Spurs have four key players United must try to contain. He added: “Jermaine Jenas gets forward and scores goals, Robbie Keane’s playing as well as ever, Aaron Lennon’s very dangerous on the wing and then there’s that man Dimitar Berbatov. Saturday's game against Birmingham was very frustrating because the crowd were very good but the team was not. The fans were always behind us, they pushed us forward, but we were not sharp enough.

Birmingham defended really well and perhaps we felt that it would be too easy. We lost concentration on their set-piece and were punished. After they made it 1-1 we went close many times but we didn't create enough overall.

I was asked if Philippe Senderos was at fault for Birmingham's equaliser but I don't believe he was caught out. There were two or three other players involved who didn't jump for the ball and that's why we got punished.

I wouldn't like to criticise any individual performance because we have had so many good games this season. Theo Walcott played his third game of the week for example. I had planned to rest him but Tomas Rosicky was sick.

The title race is so tight and every game is important. It's very difficult to say which month will be most crucial. The only thing I know is that we have lost two points we should not have lost and I am confident that the team will re-focus because they are really disappointed.

Finally, I am often asked whether I will buy anybody in the transfer window but the truth is I am not looking for anybody. It's easy to say 'let's go out and buy' when you don't win a game but this team has won so many games since the start of the season and they are good enough.

It was great to be back in the side and so heavily involved over Christmas. As a player you want to play every minute and I'm no different. I was very happy to be on the pitch and I enjoyed myself a lot.

Of course, at this time of the year there are always rumours linking players with moves to and from United. It’s only natural that a club like this attracts that kind of speculation but personally I don’t take any notice of it. As Group F winners, United will be drawn against a runner-up from one of the other groups. But Sir Alex's men cannot be drawn against fellow Group F graduates AS Roma, nor will the Reds be drawn against another English team, so that rules out Liverpool and Arsenal, who were runners-up in groups A and H respectively.

Wayne Rooney is targeting a double on Sunday - victory over fierce rivals Liverpool at Anfield and pole position in the Premier League.

“It's a massive weekend for the top four clubs,” Wayne told Red View.

“The fact that Arsenal and Liverpool both lost last weekend was great for us. If we win on Sunday then we’ve got a great chance of going top. That'll spur us on.”

Not that Rooney - Liverpool-born, Everton-bred - needs any extra cajoling. “When the fixtures come out, I look for the games against Liverpool, and possibly City as well."

Wayne wasn't looking, however, when John O'Shea scored the last-gasp winner in last season's match at Anfield.

“I was getting stitches in my leg in the dressing room,” Wayne told us. “Scholesy walked in after being sent off and we were hoping to hold on for the draw. Then our press officer ran in saying Sheasy had scored. We were all jumping around and I went back out. It was one of the best feelings I’ve experienced.”

The 3,000-or-so United fans who were there would no doubt echo that sentiment.

“We’ve got the best away fans around,” praised Wayne. “They never stop singing throughout the game and supporting the team. They could really help us on Sunday.”

So far we’re doing well, we understand each other very well on and off the pitch. That’s very important in a successful partnership, and hopefully we can continue to play together over the rest of the season and beyond. The main reason it has worked is because we both have a great desire to play. I love playing alongside Wayne and he loves it too, which is essential if the partnership is to succeed. You can see that in the way we play on the field - we both really enjoy ourselves.

How are you finding life at United?
I feel very happy here. I'm enjoying the city and from a football perspective things are going very well. So, yes, I feel really settled.

Brazilian midfielder Anderson admits it took him time to settle in Manchester. But his confidence is growing after a string of first-team starts and he's now showing why Sir Alex Ferguson swooped to sign him last summer.

“The first month was very difficult for me trying to settle in,” said Anderson, in a double-header interview with Nani for Inside United.

“It was the same when I first arrived in Portugal from Brazil, and with the help of the manager, the staff, my team-mates, particularly Ronaldo, things have become much easier. Ronaldo has been very, very important in helping me settle. We’re friends and team-mates and he’s always looking after me and Nani, keeping an eye on us. If sometimes you go astray he’ll clip your ear and put you right. He has been here for years and he's been through this period himself.”

Anderson’s happiness off the pitch is clearly contributing to some outstanding displays on it. “I felt very proud on the morning of my debut against Sunderland,” he says. “I was achieving a dream that I had in my football career. Although my previous clubs, Porto and Gremio, are top clubs, United are one of the best teams in the world. I was very pleased for what was happening.”

Now, thanks to the help of Sir Alex and his team-mates, Anderson believes he can contribute to a successful campaign. “I hope to be here for a long time and make history like Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes,” he adds. “It’s very difficult to say what we can achieve with a team like this. Look at what United achieved last year - everything worked out well, and this year we are trying to do the same.”

How would you sum up the season so far from an individual perspective?

Chris: Things have gone a lot better than I expected. I set myself targets every season and my main aims this season were to train with the first team on a full-time basis and hopefully make it onto the bench a couple of times during the first month. But I ended up being named a sub in all but one game during the opening month and started against Sunderland, so things exceeded my expectations. Now I just want to build on that and get as much first team experience as possible.

Danny: Things have gone really well. Setting up Wayne Rooney for the fourth goal against Wigan on my league debut was a great feeling. I’ve been working really hard on my crossing and overlapping down the wing so it was really rewarding.

You've both tasted success for the Reserves, but what would it mean to help the club win major trophies?

Chris: Winning is the best feeling in the world. We experienced that with the Reserves and gained a lot of confidence.

Danny: When you’re on a winning run you never think about losing. It’s important to keep that winning feeling going. We hope to play a big part in success for the first team. That’s always been our ultimate aim and we’re determined to achieve it.

t’s been a while since United and Arsenal have gone head-to-head as chief challengers in the league. And although it’s far too early to call Saturday’s visit to the Emirates a title decider, there’s still plenty riding on the outcome.

Arsene Wenger’s side are level on points with United with a game in hand, but the free-scoring Reds are on a run of eight straight league wins and have hit form at exactly the right time ahead of the trip to North London.

After the crushing late defeat at the Emirates last season, United midfielder Darren Fletcher says there’s even more reason to be fired up for battle.

“It’s a massive game already because Arsenal are level on points with a game in hand, so we don’t want to let them open a gap,” he told Red View . “Everyone is looking forward to it, especially after last season’s disappointment. To take the lead and control the game, then lose two goals late on was a big disappointment. It’s something we’re all looking to rectify.”

The rivalry over the years has been intense, but Fletcher insists there is healthy respect between the two clubs. “We know they’re a top class side,” he added. “For the neutral it should be a great spectacle. John O'Shea admits United's free-scoring recent form has banished memories of the Reds' early-season goal drought.

A series of narrow victories has been succeeded by three successive four-goal wins, including Tuesday's Champions League romp in Kyiv, and O'Shea feels the Reds' return to form was never in doubt.

"It seems a long time since that run of 1-0 wins when the 'boring' shouts were coming out," said the Irishman. "But that was never going to last with the players we've got at United.

"Attacking wise, you saw glimpses of it against Aston Villa. Some of the patterns of attacking play, and the speed of it, were so attractive and you saw that again in Kyiv. We could have had the game out of the way by half-time with some of the chances we missed. Some of the play was just so good. It was great to be part of it."

Integral to United's recent run has been the form of summer signings Carlos Tevez and Anderson, and O'Shea is quick to recognise the duo's impact.

"Some players settle in straightaway, others need fitness and matches," he said. "You see the sharpness they have. They are showing their abilities now and I'm sure they are going to go from strength to strength."

I picked up what I thought was a knee injury during Scotland’s incredible win over France last month. I played on for about five minutes but I had to come off. At first I thought it was just a bad kick and I hoped I'd be able to run it off. But the pain got gradually worse and eventually I couldn't put any pressure on it at all.

I've actually fractured the bone at the top of my leg. It wasn't too bad a fracture – it didn't go all the way through the bone. If it had, it would have been a lot more serious. But I have to give it as much time as possible to let it heal. I can't come back too quickly, although it is getting better all the time.

It's a 4-6-week healing process and it's been about three weeks already. It's frustrating, but these things happen and I have to be patient and wait for my chance.

I’ll be at Old Trafford on Saturday, hopefully watching another United win. I get really involved in the stands. I turn into a fan and get a lot more wound up than I do when I'm on the pitch. I try to stay calm when I play but something else takes over when I watch. I'm up and down, screaming and shouting at the referee.

It's great, though, and it brings me back to what it's like to support a team. The fans play off each other and I get caught up in the atmosphere. It's really good and it helps me forget about my injury for 90 minutes. So, fingers crossed for another victory...

The French striker was unable to play a full part in the final couple of months of last season’s title-winning campaign because of a knee problem. An operation ensued over the summer which kept him out of action until the beginning of this month, when he made a goalscoring return against Sunderland. He netted again last weekend, converting a last minute penalty to seal a 2-0 win over Chelsea.

Saha says he is beginning to feel like his old self once more and is hoping to silence the critics who believe he doesn’t have the mental strength to succeed.

“Anyone who says I am not willing to play until I am 100 per cent fit is not telling the truth,” he insists. “I have never refused to play for the team, yet last season I was hearing claims about me not being psychologically committed.

"The people who criticise me don't know that three years ago I was playing games despite having a knee that I couldn't bend more than 90 degrees.

“I now feel I am close to last year’s top form,” he adds. “I am not far away and the more minutes I gain on the pitch, the better I will play.

“My aim this year is to stay fit and show people the real Louis Saha.”

Real Madrid coach Bernd Schuster has opened the door to Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack, providing the Germany captain drops his wage demands.

Schuster claimed talks took place in the summer between Real and Chelsea, but collapsed on the question of wages.

The Real coach told Kicker magazine: "The door is not closed, but it's essentially a question of money.

"His Chelsea contract is extraordinary, no Real player is paid like him and we don't want to set a precedent."

Ballack, 30, was omitted from Chelsea's Champions League squad for the group stages, although the Blues insist it was on injury grounds.

Arsene Wenger has signed a contract extension with Arsenal that will keep him at the club until 2011.

The Frenchman has extended his current deal, which took him to the end of this season, by a further three years.

"My heart is tied to this football club so signing a new deal was always my intention," said the Arsenal boss.

"It has deep-seated roots and a tremendous heritage. It is my aim to uphold these values and help create new history for future generations."

Wenger's future was the subject of some doubt following the departure of former vice-chairman and his close ally David Dein in April and striker Thierry Henry in the summer.

But Wenger added: "Arsenal is the club of my life. I have been entrusted with complete freedom to implement and execute my plans on what will make the team successful.

"That means I have a responsibility to the fans to deliver silverware and also a responsibility to the players to help turn our potential into prizes."

The new deal is thought to earn the 57-year-old Wenger £4m a year.

Chelsea striker Andriy Shevchenko said he has been left baffled as to why manager Jose Mourinho has not played him this season.

The Blues claim Shevchenko, 30, is still recovering from hernia surgery despite the player having scored in a charity game in Ukraine this week.

"I don't know why Mourinho isn't playing me - I don't understand it," said the Ukrainian.

"But I'm not worried. I will just wait for my chance to come."

The striker, who was signed from AC Milan for £30m in the summer of 2006, has failed to live up to expectations at Stamford Bridge.

Owen Hargreaves is a new midfield injury worry for England coach Steve McClaren ahead of Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Israel at Wembley.

The Manchester United star is a doubt for Saturday's crucial qualifier after picking up a thigh injury.

The news comes after Steven Gerrard gave the injury-hit squad a boost by taking part in training on Wednesday, despite his broken toe.

England are already without sidelined duo Frank Lampard and David Beckham.

Chelsea midfielder Lampard is ruled out with a thigh injury, while Beckham's knee problem has ended any hope of the LA Galaxy star playing any part.

The absence of Hargreaves, who missed the recent friendly against Germany because of a knee injury, would mean McClaren having to seriously reassess his midfield options.

Radio 5Live's football correspondent Jonathan Legard said: "It's a case of one step forward and two steps back for England.

"Gerrard's participation in training is a major plus given the concerns over his fitness but Hargreaves's condition is a scare.

"He sat out training on Tuesday because of the knee injury which has restricted him for Manchester United.

"He was talking hopefully of lasting two games in a week - something he hasn't done this season.

"Now it appears there is another injury which is so often the case when recovering from problems."

Hargreaves, who has previously been troubled by tendonitis in the knee, has yet to play two games in a week following his £18m summer switch to United from Bayern Munich.

England, who are three points behind leaders Croatia in Group E, have not ruled out giving Gerrard an injection to enable him to play against Israel, though Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez is against giving him a jab.

"Steven Gerrard played a part in training," said an FA statement on Wednesday.

"He will be continually assessed by the England medical staff and a decision on his fitness for Saturday's game will be taken later in the week."

McClaren added: "We're leaving it as late as possible but we want Steven on the field and we want him ready to play.

"We will liaise with Liverpool and we will do nothing to put the player at risk, but we will also go a lot on how Steven feels and what he wants."

Despite being a doubt for Saturday's game, Hargreaves has been in confident mood about over England's qualification chances.

"It doesn't matter where we are in the table just now," said the 26-year-old Hargreaves.

"Croatia, Russia and Israel have done well so far but we are only halfway through the group, so we will see who is there at the end."

"I don't see any more anxiety around the camp for this game," added the Manchester United midfielder.

"We know what we have to do. Israel will pull everybody behind the ball. They hardly tried to get forward when they were at home, so I don't imagine it will be any different on Saturday.

"I am sure they will be happy with a draw but if we can take our chances early on, and score a goal or two, it could be a comfortable game for us."

Manchester United are the most successful Premier League club having won the title nine times. It all began in 1993 when manager Sir Alex Ferguson ended a 26-year wait to lift the Premier League crown.

The signing of Eric Cantona for £1.2million from Leeds proved a masterstroke as the Frenchman was instrumental in the title victory, along with the likes of Gary Pallister, Denis Irwin, Ryan Giggs and Paul Ince.

United retained the trophy in the following campaign and romped to further titles in 1994, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2000, 2001 and 2003. More silverware was added to the Red Devils' burgeoning trophy cabinet with FA Cup success in 1994, 1996, 1999 and 2004, plus League Cup victories in 1992 and 2006.

Perhaps the most memorable time in the club's history was the treble-winning season of 1999 when they added the European Champions League trophy to the league title and FA Cup.

Chelsea briefly broke their league dominance with title wins in 2005 and 2006. But last season, the Red Devils roared back to regain the Barclays Premiership and won't give it up without a fight.

It saved under-pressure manager Alex Ferguson from losing his job and he went on to win the European Cup Winners' Cup the season after and began their Premier League dominance with the 1993 title.

Glaziers Not To sell Manu

Rival investment groups from China and Dubai were reported to be preparing £1bn takeover bids for the Premier League champions.

But a spokesman for the family said: "Manchester United is not for sale.

"The Glazer family are not engaged in any discussion with any prospective bidder and it is not courting bidders for Manchester United."

The Glazers paid £790m for United over two years ago to complete a takeover that was initially controversial with a section of the club's fans.

But the Glazers appear to have won over some of the United support by backing Sir Alex Ferguson strongly in the transfer market since taking control.

It is understood that an unnamed Chinese consortium approached the club - rather than the Glazer family - months ago to see if the Glazers would be interested in selling United and were told the club was not for sale.

Earlier this year reports suggested that the American billionaire owner Malcolm Glazer was ready to sell United after profits fell short of his expectations.

Gabriel Heinze will join Spanish side Real Madrid on a four-year deal, the Spanish club have confirmed.

The 29-year-old, who on Tuesday was told by a Premier League arbitration panel that he could not join Liverpool as he had wished, will sign for an undisclosed fee.

The La Liga champions announced the news on their official website. A statement said: "Real Madrid and Manchester United have reached an agreement for the transfer of Gabriel Heinze.

"The Argentinian will sign a contract for the next four seasons and will be immediately incorporated into Bernd Schuster's squad."

The move draws the curtain on three years at Old Trafford for the all-action left-back, who United signed for £6.9million from Paris Saint Germain in June 2004.

Heinze made 83 appearances for the Reds scoring four goals, including a fabulous first season that saw him collect the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year award. However, injuries hampered his second season with the Reds and last season he was under pressure for the left-back slot from Patrice Evra, now Sir Alex Ferguson's first choice.

It ends months of speculation linking the former West Ham forward with a move to Old Trafford. The club revealed to ManUtd.com on Friday: "We're delighted to announce that Carlos Tevez has been registered as a member of our first-team squad by the Premier League."

The 23-year-old striker, who will wear the same No.32 shirt he wore at West Ham, is eligible to play in Sunday's match against Reading at Old Trafford, but Sir Alex Ferguson is unlikely to use the striker, which could mean a midweek outing at Portsmouth or, more likely, a part in next Sunday's Manchester Derby.

Giuseppe Rossi is adamant that he made the right choice by leaving United in search of first-team football at Villarreal.

The 20-year-old striker admits leaving Old Trafford was a difficult decision, but he has already seen enough in Spain to persuade him that a move to La Liga was the best decision for his career.

Contract rebel Gabriel Heinze last night upped the ante in his row with Manchester United by telling Sir Alex Ferguson to his face that he wants to move to Liverpool.
Defender Heinze returned to training with Untied as planned yesterday and headed straight for a meeting with manager Ferguson to thrash out his future.
And the Argentine international told Sportsmail last night he remains set on a controversial move to Anfield and that his lawyers are looking at ways to force the deal through, despite United's oppositions.

Sir Alex Ferguson has revealed that United inserted a clause in Giuseppe Rossi's contract which would allow the Reds to buy the striker back from Villarreal.

The Italian Under-21 international had several meetings with Sir Alex and was told that he would be given opportunities at Old Trafford, but the former Parma youngster wanted regular first-team football.

"We had several meetings with him to convince him that he would get plenty of football here, but that he may have to be a bit patient," explained the boss.

Gabriel Heinze admits he encouraged Carlos Tevez to choose United, despite interest in the striker from a host of top European clubs.

And although the 23-year-old's transfer has hit a snag, media reports today suggest the deal may be completed by the weekend.

Heinze, who is currently playing alongside Tevez for Argentina in the Copa America competition, told Icons.com he has held detailed discussions with the West Ham player about life at Old Trafford.

"I told him that he is going to receive a lot of help to make progress," Heinze said. "It is a team that gives you a lot of prestige, both personal and professional. And he is going there at the right time. He is 23 years old so what else could he ask for?

"It makes me feel very happy that Tevez might come to United. If everything goes okay he will be joining an amazing club. He will arrive to a team that always draws up the highest objectives and where your only concern is to play football, because all the rest is taken care of."

Whether or not Heinze will still be at Old Trafford to welcome Tevez's arrival is still open for debate. A strong of clubs have publicly declared their interest in the 29-year-old, who faces strong competition from Patrice Evra for the Reds' left back spot.

"I still don't know what I am going to do," Heinze admitted. "I'm going to start thinking about that after the Copa America. The interest in me from important teams such as Liverpool, Juventus and Real Madrid makes me feel proud, but I feel very comfortable in Manchester and I'm grateful for everything I've experienced there."

Nani says he is excited to have joined "the biggest club in the world" after being officially unveiled to the world's press at Carrington on Monday.

The pacy 20-year-old Portuguese winger, who can play on either flank, joins former Sporting Lisbon team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo at Old Trafford and he's looking forward to linking up with his fellow countryman.

"I'm very excited to be at the biggest club in the world," he says.

"I want to do my best. Ronaldo and I grew up at the same club and the fact that he was at United gave me a real incentive to join the club. I'm very much looking forward to playing alongside him."

Reds boss Sir Alex Ferguson admits he knew about Nani when the Reds were monitoring Ronaldo, but preferred him to learn his trade in Portugal.

"We've known about Nani for a few years - it was about the same time as Ronaldo, although Nani was younger of course. Carlos' knowledge of Portugal meant we were able to keep track of his progress. The UEFA Champions League is UEFA's most prestigious club competition. It was originally created as the European Champion Clubs' Cup for the 1955/56 season, before its format and name were changed in 1992. Real Madrid CF have been the most successful side in the UEFA Champions League, winning the competition three times. They are also the most successful side overall with nine triumphs, followed by six for AC Milan and five for 2005 champions Liverpool FC.

Eligibility
The Champions League is open to each national association's domestic champions, as well as clubs who finish just behind them in their respective domestic championship. The number of clubs that can be entered by an association and their entry point in the competition depends on the association’s position in UEFA's coefficient ranking list.

Evolution
Since its inception in 1992/93, the Champions League has continued to evolve, maintaining a mixture of round-robin group matches as well as its traditional knock-out format. The current format was introduced in 2003/04. After three qualifying rounds, 32 teams contest the group stage, divided into eight groups of four. The group winners and runners-up advance to the knockout stages, the eight third-placed teams move into the UEFA Cup third round, and the eight fourth-placed teams are eliminated.

Knock-out rounds
A draw determines who each of the 16 clubs will play in the first knock-out stage, with ties decided over two matches on a home and away basis. The club that scores the greater aggregate of goals advances, or in the event of both teams scoring the same number of goals, the team which scores more away goals. If the away-goals rule proves inconclusive, extra time of two periods of 15 minutes is played after the second match. If during extra time both teams score the same number of goals, away goals count double (ie the visiting team advances). If no goals are scored during extra time, the winner is decided by penalty kicks. The two teams that advance from the knock-out round contest the final, held as a single match in May.

Evolving format
The European Champion Clubs' Cup was a purely knockout competition until the format was changed in 1992/93 with the inception of the UEFA Champions League. That year the competition began with three knockout rounds with the winners advancing to a group stage involving two sets of four clubs playing home and away. The two group winners contested the final. A similar format was used the following season, with the addition of a two-legged semi-final stage involving the top two clubs from both groups.

Competition expansion
The competition expanded further for the 1994/95 season with one preliminary round required before the clubs divided into four groups of four clubs. The top two clubs in each group advanced to the knockout stage, which this time began at the quarter-final stage. The 1997/98 season saw another phase of expansion. Two qualifying rounds were introduced and the group stage expanded to six groups of four clubs each. The six group winners and the two best runners-up advanced to the knockout stages.

Additional round
An additional qualifying round was introduced for the 1999/2000 season to generate two group stages, firstly with 32 teams - eight groups of four - who played six matches apiece to reduce the competition to 16 teams for the second group stage, with the eight third-placed teams moving to the UEFA Cup third round. At the end of the second group stage, eight teams remained to contest the knock-out stage.

Argentina qualified for the quarter finals of the Copa América early on Monday night after defeating Colombia 4-2 in Maracaibo.

Having beaten the United States in their opening encounter, Lionel Messi’s national team eased to another victory to book their passage to the next phase of the competition. Despite dominating the encounter throughout though, the Albiceleste fell behind after just ten minutes when Edixon Perea put the Colombians ahead.

Quick response

The response from the Argentinians did not take long in coming though as Hugo Rodallega fouled Messi in the area and Hernán Crespo tucked away the resulting penalty with 20 minutes on the clock. Not satisfied with sitting back for the draw, Alfio Basile’s team pressed forced and they duly scored a second 11 minutes before the break with a move that began with Messi and ended with former Barça star Juan Román Riquelme adding the finishing touch. Riquelme then added his second and Argentina’s third on the stroke of half-time.

Another scare

The second half was characterised by Argentina’s complete domination, but once again they were caught napping as Jaime Castrillón pulled the Colombians back into the encounter with goal in the 76th minute. There were few fears that a draw would be on the cards and Diego Milito ensured that any hopes the opposition had were dashed when he netted a decisive fourth goal in injury time.

The Mexican Under-20 team also enjoyed a victory on Monday night as Giovani dos Santos inspired his team to a 3-0 win over Gambia in the World Championships. The Barça starlet opened the scoring with a goal in the 57th minute.

Owen Hargreaves has completed his move to United from Bayern Munich, putting pen to paper on a four-year deal with the Barclays Premier League champions.

The England international midfielder, 26, was relieved to officially become a contracted United player after a lengthy transfer saga.

"It's been a long time coming," Owen exclusively told ManUtd.com. "It was probably the worst-kept secret in football, but it's great to be here."

Hargreaves' move to Manchester was mooted by the tabloids for almost a year, following his outstanding displays for England at the 2006 World Cup.

Bayern were reluctant to let him leave without a fight, twice rejecting bids before eventually relenting - and Owen is delighted with the end result.
